Cats

There are two sides to every cat or kitten. They are soft to touch, fun to play with, and enjoy playing and affection when the mood takes them. But they have a solitary, independent side and are happy to keep themselves entertained. That’s not to say they don’t need care and attention, but it’s important not to chase or force them when they need space.

Cats are relatively easy to look after and provide for. The basic requirements are a bed, litter tray which most will take to easily, and food/water. They can scratch and tear, so training them to use a scratching post will be beneficial. Cat toys and games will keep them entertained, and a cat flap will make it easy for them to explore.

Sometimes cats will disappear, and they also have a wild instinct for hunting, which may mean you are presented with dead animals, which though a sign of esteem for the cat, might not be to you or your children’s tastes.

If you decide to buy a cat, and have children under the age of five, then you will need to spend time training your pet so they know the child will not harm them, is fragile, but is no threat to them. Older children can be taught how to handle and interact with the cat. They do make the best pets for older children, whose busier lives will work well with the cat’s independent nature, and still allow plenty of time for play and cuddles.

Once you’ve considered all these issues, you will then be ready to choose you cat or kitten. There are two main types of cat: pedigree or non-pedigree, with the former being more expensive. Within these categories there can be long or short haired cats, noisy and quiet ones, those which are friendly and easy to train, and those which are more independent. Each breed will have their own personalities, so choose one that will best fit in with the lifestyle you and your children lead. Age may also be a factor in your choices, as older, sturdier cats can be better for younger children. When all things are considered, then it’s time to head over to the pet shop or breeder, and bring your new friend home.
