Dogs

‘A dog is mans best friend’, and never a truer word has been spoken. Dogs are loving, affectionate, and loyal animals, that will soon become a big part of any owner’s life. They can also have many benefits for children; who will get plenty of fresh air and exercise, boost their confidence, and may even make new friends and become independent through their dogs. It’s important however that it’s not just the children that want a dog, you should want one too.

Dogs will cost a lot in both time and money throughout their lives, and you must be prepared for both. Much of the responsibility will lie on your shoulders, at least when your children are young. Dogs are not ideal companions for those under the age of five, but it can work if they are carefully introduced. From the age of five upwards a child/pet relationship can flourish, and the child can learn a lot from helping to care for the animal. Before buying one however, there are some important things to consider:

With regards to cost, most dogs will cost several hundred pounds to buy, if not more, if they are a pedigree breed. They will then require food throughout their lives, and vets bills are likely as well, though the cost of food in particular will depend on the size of the dog. Along with the size and cost of the dog, also decide on sex, and whether you want a puppy or adult dog. Puppies are fast learners and easier to train/socialize, while adults dogs may be more of a challenge, and it’s best to seek information on their behaviour patterns if you can.

Lifestyle is also a factor, and you should choose a dog that will fit in with it. All dogs will require some outdoor space, a regular routine of walks, and ideally shouldn’t be left alone all day. Some breeds will be more demanding than others, with puppies and larger athletic breeds requiring the most care and attention. Boisterous dogs would also be unsuitable if you have a small home, and young children or elderly relatives living with you.

All things considered, it’s now time to buy your new dog/puppy and bring him/her home. With the right care and attention he or she will soon become an asset to your household, just don’t forget to have the pooper scooper at the ready!
