Gerbils, like rats and hamsters, come from the rodent family. They can grow up to 10cm tall and live for up to 5 years. Although they can become sleepy and less active in their old age, they are generally energetic sociable animals that make excellent pets. You will find Gerbils to be hygienic, easy to look after animals, but there are a few things to consider before buying them.
Gerbils don’t like to live alone, so it’s best to buy a same sex pair from a reputable breeder or pet store. Although they are easy to look after, they do have some specific requirements in terms of cages and equipment. Gerbils will need lots of space in their home to exercise and burrow, especially if you’re buying a group of them. Fish tanks with secure, ventilated lids can be used to house Gerbils, or plastic cages suitable for Hamsters. Gerbils do love to gnaw and chew, so make sure they don’t chew their way out of plastic cages or are living in a cage with painted (thus toxic) bars. Also find out from the pet shop the correct types of bedding, food, and cage accessories for your Gerbils. They love tunnels and things to gnaw on, which will keep their teeth healthy.
When you get your Gerbils home, it’s important to teach your children to be patient with them if they are timid, and to handle them in the right way. They will rarely bite, or become sick if well looked after, but must be watched if they are let out of their cages. A happy healthy Gerbil, is sure to make a great addition to your home, and I’m sure your children will agree.
