Children will often notice mice on a visit to a pet shop. They are small, often white, and they look cute and cuddly. But what sort of pet will they make for your children? The answer to that often depends on what you and your children are like and what sort of pet you’re looking for.
Mice being small and agile, might be hard to handle for young children, and can nip if they get stressed. Some mice can be tamer than others as well, but with calm and patient families they can be successful pets. Generally they’re best for those who like to watch comical pets, rather than constantly handle them.
Mice are best suited to those over the age of 5, as it’s much easier to teach them how to be responsible around the animal and care for it properly. Before buying mice it’s important to know that they are social animals and prefer to have company. A same sex female pair would be best, as males can fight and be smelly. Mice can also breed from 8 weeks old, so determining the sex is also vital.
Mice can live for up to two years, sometimes longer, and during this time you will find their diet and space requirements easy to provide for and their overall costs low. Whilst they may not be as popular in the pet shop as some of their other furry friends, they can make excellent pets.
